Book Review: The Vicious Deep by Zoraida Córdova

Well, What Can I say this was my second go round and I still love this book and I'm so glad that I decided to reread it sooner than later.

This book follows Tristian who learns that he's a Merman and while internally freaking out also thinks why couldn't he be something less girly like a werewolf. I like his sense of humor in face of learning that he's something not human.

But of all the creatures in my mom's fairy-tale books, she had to go and be the girliest? Come on!

I feel like he came out on the chill side of things while learning what he was but he still had the right amount of WTF is happening here panicky feelings. Overall I feel like he was just excited to learn about his other side of the family and connecting with them.

Then there's Kurt and Thalia who are a brother and sister duo who kind of helped him with his journey into this new world. Kurt is stiff but likable and I feel like he has a dry sense of humor. While his sister Thalia is just so interested in everything in this new environment and is slightly adorable in her innocence where this new environment is concerned at least.

There there's Layla who is Tristian's best friend from childhood and she's stubborn and loyal and won't quit until she finds out what's going on with her best friend.

Now she and Tristian have a "will they or won't they" type of vibe going on, BUT this leads to some irritating and oh please STOP conversations and actions which I felt was the worse this book had to offer and the only thing that really irritated me about this book.

There are some other characters I liked, but I'll let you met them yourselves but they were all very interesting their own right.

Overall I felt like this was an excellent start to the journey Tristian is on. We get to spend time with him, his family and his friends and see what drives him forward and many seeds were planted that I'm excited to see grow. I loved the author's writing style. Her turn of phrase and descriptions were poetry like in this book and I just wanted to highlight everything and I look forward to seeing how it all turns out.

The magic hums in my veins, wanting to be released, craving water the way I also crave air, and I wonder if one of those needs is ever going to be greater than the other.

Book Review: The Grownup by Gillian Flynn

First off the cover.
I have much love for it.
It's simple and intricate all at once.

Now on to the story.
From the first sentence.
When the words,

I didn't stop giving hand jobs because I wasn't good at it. I  stopped giving hand jobs because I was the best at it.

are said I was hooked.

The main character is a roll with the punches type. Which considering her life is not surprising. She's currently pretending to be a psychic so when this woman, Susan come to her saying has a haunted house what she initially see's as an easy "pacify the rich woman with too much time on her hands and make easy money" job may turn out to be all too real.

This is a short story so I don't want to say too much except I ended up really liking it and the way she spun the story keep pulling me in and kept me guessing long after the book was over, but there were a few mishaps along the way and even opened ended stories need certain thing fleshed out.

This was my first Gillian Flynn book and I'm definitely looking forward to my second.

In the end I gave it 4/5 stars and for full disclosure I got this book for review in exchange for honest review from "Blogging For Books".

Book Review: Armada by Ernest Cline

Now where do I begin?

This book follows Zack Lightman who is a gamer and pop culture enthusiast. In this world there's this game called Armada a popular online flight simulator in which the players must protect earth from alien invaders.
One day while looking out the window in class he see's a flying saucer just like one the invading aliens use in Armada. No he's not losing his mind like he think he his. The aliens are all too real and his skills in the game Armada are about to come in handy.

I loved Zack his thought process is sometimes how I think. Relating situations to things seen in movies, TVShows, and what I've read in books. I also really enjoyed the relationship he had with his mother.
Despite things they were really close and it was nice to read about.

"You can do great things. She looked me in the eyes. You know that, right?

I felt thought that besides Zach most of the other character's didn't get enough screen time.  I mean I liked them well enough from the brief time we get to spend with them. It's just so much stuff happened in such a short amount of time. I felt like it should have been drawn out a little more and It definitely should have been a longer book.

Then of course there were the 80's pop culture references everywhere. I heard a lot of people were annoyed by this but I didn't mind them I understand why the main character was attached and it made me nostalgic sometimes. Other times I didn't know what he was talking about it but it sounded interesting enough for me to go look it up and occasionally add things to my To-Watch list Lol.

Also some of the technical details for the ships kind of bogged things down for me. Would have been nice to have some sketches occupying each explanation.

Overall I really enjoyed this novel. There's potential there for a sequel, but still works as a stand alone. Definitely think this would make an awesome movie if done CORRECTLY. There's so much more I want to talk about, but I don't want to spoil anyone.

In the end gave it 4/5 stars and For full disclosure I got this book for review in exchange for honest review from "Blogging For Books".

Book Review: More Than This by Jay McLean

Even now just thinking about everything that went on in this book makes my emotions exhausted.

Lets start with the plot.

On Mikayla prom night she discovers that her boyfriend of four years and her best friend since the fifth grade has been sleeping together behind her back for two years. On the same night she discovers this she meets Jake who see's everything go down and he ask's her if she would like to go to his school prom with him.

This book takes you on a roller coaster of emotions. So many life changing things happen to Mikayla in one night.

This book has two points of view Mikayla's and Jake which I like. I like knowing which each person in the relationship is thinking through out the book..

Mikayla,
So much happens to this character that I'm surprised that she isn't catatonic through the whole thing. Thank god she has Jake, he is as cliched as it might sound "her light in the darkness" watching their relationship unfold as you on edge wondering what could possibly happen next. No matter what happens she keeps on going and you have to admire her for that.

Jake,
He's not perfect. Sometimes he got frustrated because of her mix signals she's giving which stemmed from her own insecurities about not being good enough for him and also wondering if she had the right to be happy in the wake of the tragedy that as befallen her. I liked Jake and at first I though he was going to be "too perfect" which can be irritating in and of it self but he had some stuff in his past that crops up as well as his jealousy issues. Although they both had that at times. He never stopped fighting for them and I loved that about him.

I love Jake's circle of friend who just welcome her with open arms and who we'll apparently see later with their own books. I especially look forward to seeing what happens with Logan who I just felt for since he was the only single one and he was feeling like a 7th wheel plus you can just sense some turmoil going on with him under the surface. Also Lucy who was her Book Buddy was just adorable and sassy.

Now there is a LOT of drama in this book, some may to much but I quite enjoyed although once in a while I was like could you give the characters a break. Sometimes I got really frustrated with Mikayla but I calmed myself down by reminding myself about everything that had happen to her in such a short time.

It was fast pace and never boring and so much stuff went on and I don't want to spoil anything for you so I wont say much except this is a journey you must take yourself.

I gave it 5/5 stars overall.

Full Disclosure:

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.

Book Review: The Chaos Of Stars by Kiersten White

This book follows this teenage girl Isadora. Her parents are the God and Goddess, Osiris and Isis respectively. While they are immortal beings she is not and this knowledge is basically the problem of the whole book. It's just teenage angst with some mythology thrown in.

That's not to say I didn't like the book or more accurately grow to like the book. I say that because the main characters is annoying and listening to her yap the whole book was no fun in the least.

Let's start with the world. Where in the modern world. It starts off in Egypt but most of the book takes place in America.

Isadora who feels like her parents don't love her or even care she exist. Desperately wants to leave and manages to do so when her mother is having a vulnerable time. She is I'm going to say once again. Annoying, Whiny, Self-centered, and at times arrogant. It's not like you don't see where she's coming from but at the same time it all could have been solved by I don't know actually talking to her parents but of course even though she's supposed to be smart this is a thing she actively avoids. Although the talking thing could be said about most plot lines in books in general but she really rubbed me the wrong way and I felt no sympathy for her. Her parents, siblings, and friends on the other hand I have massive sympathy for. Although how she even mange to get friends with that attitude is a miracle in and of itself.

Although towards the end she kind of pulls her head out of her...you know where I was going. It still didn't excuse the first half of the book where all I did was hope she would find a cliff and walk off of it. As you can tell I had strong feelings.

Now she manipulates/convinces her parents to send her to live with her brother Sirius who's in his 30's and married. He seemed nice and had a good relationship with their parents much to her surprise. She seemed to think that just because she did not have a good relationship with her parents (her own doing) that all her siblings had to feel and act the same way she did.

I can't say to much about the other characters because while Isadora had a little character development the others had none really.

There was Taylor who she meets when volunteering at the museum. She was perky and nice. So was her boyfriend Scott.

Then there's the love interest Ry who was interesting as well. They didn't go much into detail with anyone though and while I love the snippets of learning of Egyptian Mythology. The book was rushed. There was a mystery of some sorts that was wrap-up fast and could have been done better. This was more like a teen drama with misunderstandings around every corner.

All in all I did like the book but didn't love it. It had a lot potential but fell short and that saddens me. I will be checking out the authors other books Paranormalcy & Mind Games because I loved her writing style and just some of the quotes I had to update my Goodreads were amazing and Occasionally I really liked Isadora's humour. Those moments of liking her happened more the toward the end of the book though.

In the end I liked the book, But it didn't really deliver on some of the things it promised. So 2/5 stars.

Book Review: Lover Unknown by Ellie Kincade

I would like to say that I got this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This book follows this girl, Hadley, who gets a invitation to a mysterious yet well known sex club called Club Q.

I don't have much to say about this book. It was short and it was okay.
As far as erotica goes, I've read better but the plot was interesting - just not well executed.

Hadley seems like she's fun, down to earth, and willing to try new things. So this club invite is perfect for her in a way.

But, when we get to the end, we learn something that had me rolling my eyes a little bit.

I do wonder how this will turn out in the end, since this is a first book in a series. However, I felt like it probably would have been better as a long stand alone novel.

In the end, I gave it 2/5 stars. Maybe, once all the installments are out, I'll read them back to back. But it's not a priority.

Book Review: Spring's Fall (Autumn Numbers, #1) by Harambee K. Grey-Sun

I got this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The story of one young man crossing the burning bridge between innocence and experience, Spring's Fall is a narrative dramatic poem comprised of several stand-alone poems about fitting in and falling out, finding oneself and losing oneself, and discovering the meanings of life, love, and identity. An unusual but familiar coming-of-age narrative, Spring's Fall is a poem written in an unfashionable style that represents both the uniqueness and awkwardness felt by many adolescents trying to find their place in a world seemingly made for everyone else but them.

-Synopsis taken from goodreads.

This book is supposed to follow a storyline about someone growing up or thats what I gleamed from the synopsis.

Though out this book I catch fleeting glances of a storyline but I didn't grasp it. So it was very fortunate that the epilogues basically explains everything I read. Im torn between thinking that this is a good thing and a bad thing. On one hand Im glad that I know exactly what the storyline was and what happen but I felt like I should have been able to grasp this without needing the Epilogue.

There are a few turn of phrases that I connected with and enjoyed. (Ill Link my good reads so you can read my updates)
 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/980719380

Now I always believe with poetry novels that it's hit or miss. Poetry books are more subjective than other genres, but this story being told in verse just did not live up the hopes I had in it.
In the end I gave the book one star, as I did like the author's style of writing. I am hoping to pick up another of his works and read it soon.

Book Review: Cain's Blood by Geoffrey Girard

(After finishing Project Cain (which I loved and reviewed - the link will be below), I of course needed to know more. I specifically wanted to know more of the gory details and this adult version Cain’s Blood provided those aspects.

For those of you who don't know Cain's Blood & Project Cain are companion novels, and take place at the same time but through different points of view. Project Cain is a young adult novel, and tended to not get into too much of the gory details. On the other side, Cain's Blood is an adult novel and doesn't shy away from these things as much.

I won’t be spoiling either of these books in this review (in my opinion) so you may read on.

Now while in Project Cain we followed the story of the government cloning infamous serial killers and what they wanted to do with them. In this novel the government raised these clones in different environments and situations, in order to learn more about Nature vs Nurture. In Project Cain we saw everything solely through the eyes of one of the clone's of Jeffrey Dhamer.
In this book, Cain’s Blood, we get a far more reaching view of the events taking place.

We get to see the point of views of the victims, various clones, various scientist, and of course the higher ups. Mainly though we see things from Shawn Castillos point of view, who was hired to capture six runaway clones who are currently on a murder spree.

I enjoyed being in Castillos head and seeing what his thoughts and interpretations were going through his mind. He's a former black op's agent who thought he's seen everything, and was sure in his beliefs. He had come to terms with some of the things the government does in order to insure the safety of his country, but in this novel he starts to question a few things.

We follow him as he and the clone he found (who is not part of the runaway six) embark on a cross country journey and find that there are even bigger secrets that neither had imagined.

Now this is an adult novel and in Project Cain, while certain things were alluded to here, we get all the gory details so if your not okay with that then just read Project Cain.

In the end I gave this a 5/5 stars because loved his his writing style and I hope to read more by this author one day.

Book Review: The Lover's Dictionary by David Levithan

A modern love story told through a series of dictionary-style entries is a sequence of intimate windows into the large and small events that shape the course of a romantic relationship.

Synopsis From GoodReads:https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9279177-the-lover-s-dictionary

Apparently this book is based on David Levithan's own romantic relationship.

We follow this guy who goes through the alphabet and finds a word related to the situation of what his relationship is currently going through.

We follow as they meet for the first time , fall in love and and learn the meaning of the word trust. One of the main focuses of the book is how the main protagonist deals with the fact that his girlfriend cheated on him.

I only had one problem with this book and that was not knowing what some of the words meant but usually after reading what he wrote I could tell what he meant. Though other times I had to look up the meaning of the word to understand what he meant.

In the end I gave this book 5/5 and it was a nice quick read. If your planning to read this book comment down below and let me know.I'll leave you with one of my favorite passages from the book.

"recant, v.

I want to take back at least half of the “I love you”s, because
I didn't mean them as much as the other ones. I want to take
back the book of artsy photos I gave you, because you didn't
get it and said it was hipster trash. I want to take back what
I said about you being an emotional zombie. I want to take
back the time I called you “honey” in front of your sister and
you looked like I had just shown her pictures of us having
sex. I want to take back the wineglass I broke when I was mad,
because it was a nice wineglass and the argument would have
ended anyway. I want to take back the time we had sex in a
rent-a-car, not because I feel bad about the people who got
in the car after us, but because it was massively uncomfortable.
I want to take back the trust I had while you were away in
Austin. I want to take back the time I said you were a genius,
because I was being sarcastic and I should have just said
you’d hurt my feelings. I want to take back the secrets I told
you so I can decide now whether to tell them to you again. I
want to take back the piece of me that lies in you, to see if I
truly miss it. I want to take back at least half the “I love
you”s, because it feels safer that way.”

Book Review: Witch Eyes by Scott Tracey

Wow, Where to start? The Cover Perhaps?  I personally love it, and it actually has something to do with the book *Gasp* who would have thought that would be possible these days.

Moving on,

This book is about Braden a 17 year old boy who has a rare, legendary power that he calls "Witch Eyes". Witch Eye's give's a person the ability to see the world unfiltered. They can and I Quote: "Soak up everything like a sponge, See everything that ever happened in a place, to a person". There's more to the power but I think you guys got the point.

Braden who lives with his Uncle John, sets off by himself to learn more about his past and it land him in the City of Belle Dam. Where he is caught between two feuding witch families. Catherine Lansing and Jason Thorpe.

Braden who is revealed to Jason's son has been crushing on this boy Trey who turns out to be Catherine son.

Romeo and Juliet? We can only hope that their fates wont be as tragic. Especially considering Braden may be destined to kill him.

Moving on once again.

With all the lies, manipulation, and secrets going on. Who will come up on top? and Who is the driving force behind it all? Read to find out.

Braden: Is always on the going from the first moment he sets foot in this town. He wants to find out why he's drawn to this town and doesn't let much, Except from Trey, distract him from his goal. I liked that because I felt that characters forget how much danger they're in and do incredibly stupid and sloppy things. I didnt feel that way with Braden.

Uncle John: He raised Braden but his secrets are vast and I we only see the tip of the ice berg where his character is concerned. I would love to find out more about him in the future.

Trey: I like him and didn't like him all at once.Misguided fool.

There are of course a few more characters but I'll let you guys read and find them out for yourself.

I like the fact that while's there's romance its not the center of the story.Though I do hope for more romance in the future but I don't want a "Love Triangle" of any kind.

Overall I loved this book  and I didnt give any ppoilers despite what it may seem like. It was an easy and faced paced read. I give it a 4/5 stars and I look forward to the 2 sequels.

Book Review: Insanity by Lauren Hammond

Insanity follows Adelaide Carmichael AKA Addy as she is brought into the Oakhill Institute kicking and screaming. She doesn't remember much of what happened. The only thing she remembers is that her and her boyfriend Damien Allen where in love and supposed to run away with one another and yet she ended up here. The question is Why?

This Cover is amazing.

So first off we have the main character Addy who is unreliable to say the least. I mean how can we now whats going if she doesn't. It's what makes the book interesting, piercing together whats more likely to be real and whats not.

We follow Addy in the time before coming to the Institute where she is experiencing first love with Damien. We follow the progression of their relationship as well as the deteriorating relationship she has with her father.

I liked the relationship between Addy and Damien. It was lovely and sweet. Though I felt at times we didn't get to learn more about Damien. Which was a shame, but then you have to remember that this is ultimately Addy's story.

We see the obstacles in there relationship from his mother to her drunken and abusive father.

Following their love story was interesting though I think we all know that it probably didn't end well just for the fact that she'd currently residing in Oakhill.

As we follow her in the past to see what lead to her to be locked up in the first place we also spend time with her in the institution in present day. We see how she interacts with the other members of Oakhill. We see her therapy sessions and her trying to get back her memory. All while trying to escape from the institute which has more secrets then she can ever imagine and a danger that's all to real

I found the story to be an interesting story about the complexity of the human mind and what it does to help preserve and help ones sanity.

This is the first book in a trilogy and I'm so excited to see what happens next.

Overall I gave this book a 5/5 stars.
It's currently $0.99 on Amazon Kindle

Book Review: Strangelets by Michelle Gagnon

GoodReads Description:
17-year-old Sophie lies on her deathbed in California, awaiting the inevitable loss of her battle with cancer…
17-year-old Declan stares down two armed thugs in a back alley in Galway, Ireland…
17-year-old Anat attempts to traverse a booby-trapped tunnel between Israel and Egypt…

All three strangers should have died at the exact same moment, thousands of miles apart. Instead, they awaken together in an abandoned hospital—only to discover that they’re not alone. Three other teens from different places on the globe are trapped with them. Somebody or something seems to be pulling the strings. With their individual clocks ticking, they must band together if they’re to have any hope of surviving.

Soon they discover that they've been trapped in a future that isn't of their making: a deadly, desolate world at once entirely familiar and utterly strange. Each teen harbors a secret, but only one holds the key that could get them home. As the truth comes to light through the eyes of Sophie, Declan, and Anat, the reader is taken on a dark and unforgettable journey into the hearts of teens who must decide what to do with a second chance at life.

Description Taken From Goodreads.com
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15798830-strangelets

The story alternates between 3 points of view:

Sophie: Who was on her death-bed at the time and had already resigned herself to death. Has a tenuous lease on life. In the course of the story I feel like she gets a new lease on life and kind of comes into her own despite the dangers that await around every corner.

Then there's,

Declan: The classic bad boy with a heart of gold, he's a smart talker and someone who other people natural gravitate to and yet makes a lot of stupid decisions which is why he ended up in the hospital to began with.

and then there's,

Anat: Who's harsh and suspicious of everything and everyone. Didn't quite like her in the beginning but you grow to understand that the life she grew up in made her like this.

Over all I really liked this story it was interesting to see how people from different walks of life react to this given situation and One of the things that I really liked about this book is how well the characters were fleshed out and I felt that I really got to know them but I also found the story line fairly predictable and it reminded me of a T.V. from back in the 90's but I do like the direction the Author took with it and the Journey that each character had to take to coming to terms with what is exactly is going on

I like the ending because it gives you enough closure and yet I feel like if there are sequels in the future it wouldn't feel forced.

In the end I gave this book a 4/5 stars.

*I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for an Honest review.
